Welcome to Unleash the Beast, a new blog about animals, art, and pop culture. In this blog, I'll be writing about how humans perceive and relate to animals--and how those relationships and perceptions play out in books, movies, TV shows, and other cultural "objects." I'll be writing critical reviews, basically, but with a special focus on animals.

I should say up front that I'm concerned (and frequently pretty brassed off) about the peculiar ways our society regards animals and the, well, brutal ways we treat them. So I have what might be thought of as an animal rights perpective--but I'm not a doctrainaire animal rights activist. In this blog, I'm less interested in preaching than understanding. Hope that makes sense! I'll post my first review soon.
